On May 1 at 7pm there will be a special screening of short films at the Abbot Public Library in Marblehead. The films come from the Raw Art Works Real to Reel Filmschool and are in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Marblehead Task Force Against Discrimination (TFAD).

Following the screening, participants will be privy to a discussion and Q & A session with a representative of Raw Art Works. RAW is a 26 year old youth arts nonprofit based in Lynn. They believe that kids should be seen and heard and they pursue their mission to “ignite the desire to create and confidence to succeed in underserved youth.”

Today, RAW is a nationally recognized organization and cultural anchor in Lynn that helps at-risk youth with a creative outlet to the streets.
Organized with the Marblehead Task Force Against Discrimination, this event helps to promote their mission to work again hatred and bigotry and to celebrate and strengthen Marblehead’s diverse community.

Get Ready for the 50th Marblehead Festival of Arts

The first ever Marblehead Festival of Arts was held way back in July 1963. Fifty years later it

is still going strong, and getting ready to burst forth on July 3-6, 2014. Visual and fine arts will be featured along with performing arts, as it has been since the very first Festival.

The organization behind the Festival is a non-profit group comprised of local residents on a voluntary basis, donating their talents and time in a large number of ways. The goal behind the establishment of the organization and the festival is to promote and encourage artistic events in Marblehead through the presentation of an annual arts festival. The organization has continued to grow and prosper each year, until today when not only is there an arts festival in July, but other events all year long. The organization also contributes greatly to the development of other local projects and organizations connected to the world of art.

On April 27 there will be a Volunteer Information Party in anticipation of the annual Festival of Arts. The party will take place from 3 PM to 5 PM, at the Corinthian Yacht Club at 1 Nahant Street on Marblehead Neck.

“When you volunteer for the Festival, you become part of a great legacy here in town,” said Maureen McKinnon, Volunteer Chairperson. “Next year will be our 50th Festival, and every one of those fifty years was the result of great folks coming together and working hard, but having a terrific time doing it.”

Also upcoming is the marking of the 25th anniversary of the Marblehead Task Force Against Discrimination (TFAD), to be held at Marblehead’s Abbot Public Library. This is a triple-collaboration of Raw Art Works (Lynn), and the Abbot Public Library (Marblehead). At the event, short films will be screened from the Raw Art Works Real to Reel Filmschool. Giving Kindly in Marblehead

thrift-shopSince the very sweet ladies who work tirelessly to ensure the St. Michael’s Thrift Shop operates smoothly are too genteel to ask for donations, those in the Marblehead region who have a few coins to spare should take note. There are two stores: one at 20 Pleasant Street, and the other, a little further up the road at 149 Pleasant Street. Both need the assistance and kindness of locals.

Currently the stores are also in need of additional inventory, so for anyone in the area who has clothes, useful items, etc., take a stroll down Pleasant Street and help these amazing ladies out. At the same time, have a bit of a sort through to see if there is anything that catches your eye.

For those who want to help out but cannot do so financially, the ladies are always looking for volunteers to help work in the store – sorting through the bags that people bring in.
